Sunday cruise 02Nov14

TR by DeeCee
Trip date: 2nd November 2014
Participants: DeeCee & family
Launch Site:  North Maroochy River, Yandina
Destination:  Downstream
Conditions: Glassy, outgoing tide
Keen Angler Program: none

Knew the wind was up and didn't feel like taking the stinky out to be blown around all over the place so it was decided we'd take the new (secondhand Old Town Loons) yaks for a paddle somewhere out of the wind.  I'd had an enjoyable session out at Yandina on the North Maroochy in similar wind conditions so that was the location.

This was the first time loading the 3 yaks on the car and it took a bit of thought on how to best do this and still have all of them there when we arrived.  After some trial and error tying them on they all seemed secure and this proved to be the case as they were all still there when we arrived at our launch point.

Yaks were off and in the water in no time, tide was already going out so heading upriver was out as it was going to get very shallow very quickly so we headed downstream.

Trip down was a relaxing drift really, flicked into a few dark areas under trees but no hits so decided to do some trolling with immediate results hooking a mid 30's catfish on a small trolled HB, that was a first...it was quickly released without spiking me and we continued on.

After an hour or so the girls decided it was time to turn around knowing they had to paddle against the outgoing tide on the way back.  Almost immediately one of them hooked up to a small 30cm Flathead which excited them no end.  A couple of comments about how unattractive a fish the flathead is it was released to grow big and fat.

Back on the troll we made good time against the tide and just before hitting the last turn my reel screamed and the 1-3kg rod doubled over, it was on for young & old.  After what seemed like a very long fight which seemed destined to end in a win for the hooked fish and a couple of heart stopping moments trying to net the fish, it was finally landed.  A little Trevally which really punched above it's weight.

He was released to fight another day and we headed back to the launch point, car was packed and yaks were loaded (not as much thought went into the reloading and it showed by the time I got home (reminded me on the Clampetts moving truck)).

All in all a very relaxing way to spend Sunday morning.....

Cheers
